Neil is a research psychologist, trained at the University of Cape Town in health research. He has developed, implemented and evaluated a multitude of local, regional and national health programs over a period of 25 years, primarily focused on community empowerment, HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, and food programs, typically in under-resourced locations. He has also worked extensively with the private sector in the areas of employee health, empowerment, and absenteeism.
He has published several journal articles in the area of gender and medical treatment. His book Positive Health, focusing on health empowerment of people living with HIV, is the largest selling and distributed secular book in African publishing history. He has also published in the area of adolescent life skills, tuberculosis, and community program design.
